Even if a relative or son is involved in drug trafficking, they should not be spared: Lakhanpal

Indradutt Lakhanpal, the MLA from Barsar constituency, described drug trafficking as the most dangerous crime against society, stating that anyone involved in this heinous act, whether a relative or even his own son, should receive the harshest possible punishment under the law. He said that drug addiction is not only ruining the youth but also hollowing out the very foundations of society, and any leniency or protection in this matter is inexcusable.

MLA Lakhanpal strongly questioned why the accused was released so quickly after being caught with drugs. He demanded that the police and administration provide a clear, factual, and public explanation to the media and the public regarding the circumstances and basis of the accused’s release, leaving no room for doubt.

In his statement, the MLA said that criminal cases should also be registered against those who protect drug traffickers, play a role in securing their bail, or exert pressure on their behalf. He clarified that no parent, officer, or public representative wants their child to fall prey to drug addiction, but if someone is found involved in this crime, action should be taken directly and strictly against the accused, without resorting to invoking relationships or names.

Lakhanpal also raised serious questions about the role of the SP Hamirpur, stating that it was extremely unfortunate to bring up his alleged connections with the accused youth during a press conference. As the head of the district police, the SP should introspect on his own department’s functioning, the impartiality of the investigation, and the speed of action before leveling accusations against others.

He unequivocally stated that he or his family have no connection with drugs. He said that defaming a public representative or resorting to superficial actions will not solve the drug problem. An honest, rigorous, and continuous fight at the ground level is necessary.

He concluded that cutting off the roots of drug supply in the state is the only way to get rid of this social curse. For this to happen, the administration must work free from political pressure, and every section of society must play an active role in this fight.
